An objection can be seen from different perspectives, and the way we perceive it, the way it touches our deepest chords … can influence our approach and our response. Here are some thoughts on how an objection can be considered a threat or an opportunity, a nuisance or fun:

Threat or Opportunity?

Threat?

  • A challenge to my credibility:An objection can question my competence or the validity of my arguments… ‘Do they dare question my words? I’ve been doing this job for 10 years…
  • Resistance to change: Often, objections arise from fear of change or uncertainty, making it more difficult to obtain consensus.‘No, it’s better if we continue to do what we know how to do, as my great-grandfather taught me in 1950. Here, I’m in charge, and we do as I say’

Opportunities::

  • Improving Solutions:Objections can highlight weaknesses or areas for improvement that have not been considered, allowing you to refine and improve your proposals. ‘You know what, you’re right? I hadn’t considered this aspect’
  • Building trust:Effectively responding to an objection demonstrates competence and transparency, strengthening trust in your work or your proposals. ‘Well, I studied this topic in depth, even taking a course’
  • Openness to Dialogue:Objections stimulate communication and discussion, leading to greater mutual understanding and more shared solutions.

Annoyance or Fun?

Annoyance:

  • Flow disruption:Objections can interrupt the flow of a presentation or discussion, requiring you to deviate from the main topic.
  • Stress and Frustration:Dealing with objections, especially frequent or aggressive ones, can be stressful and frustrating.
  • Wasted Time:Responding to objections can take time and energy that could be used elsewhere.

Fun:

  • Intellectual challenge:Responding to objections stimulates the mind and can be seen as an intellectual game in which you find the best solution.
  • Personal growth:Every objection is an opportunity to improve your communication and problem-solving skills.
  • Satisfaction:Successfully overcoming an objection can provide great personal and professional satisfaction, strengthening your self-esteem.

In Conclusion

Objections can be perceived in different ways depending on the attitude/awareness with which we face them. It is always up to you to choose how to see them.

As a threat to my ego? Or as an opportunity and a chance for growth?

The key is to train and maintain an internal balance in a conscious way to prevent words or judgments from igniting emotions and reactions. With a positive attitude and a growth-oriented awareness, every objection can be transformed into an opportunity to improve and strengthen your ideas and your self-esteem.

Take notes on the journey…
